FAQ: How to Apply & Renew

What information do I need to apply?
You will need to know your gross income (before taxes), any other income, child support, car insurance, childcare and work transportation expenses. You will need to submit proof of income (one pay stub) and a signature. You will receive specific instructions on where to send this information when you apply.

Do I have to give my Social Security Number on the application?
A Social Security number is encouraged but not required to apply for CHIP. However, if your application is referred to Medical Assistance, a Social Security number is required.

I applied for coverage. How can I check the status of my application?
On average, it takes four to six weeks for a CHIP application to be processed. If you applied online at www.compass.state.pa.us, you can check the status of your application by using your e-form number and the password you established. If you applied with a paper application or over the phone at 1-800-986-KIDS, you will need to call the CHIP contractor that you chose and they can tell you the status of your application.

I am losing my job and my health insurance. Can I get CHIP for my children?
Along with the other eligibility criteria, your children cannot be covered by any other insurance when you apply for CHIP. However, if your children are currently covered, but you are losing your health benefits, you can apply for CHIP. Be sure to note the end date of their insurance coverage on the application.

Why do I need to renew?
To keep your children covered, you have to renew your CHIP coverage every year. It's not automatic. You will receive a renewal form 90 days before your coverage ends.

To learn more about renewing, click "Renew" on the menu above.

I didn't renew my children's coverage - can I reapply?
Yes. You can apply for CHIP three ways: calling the PA Helpline at 1-800-986-KIDS and applying over the phone or requesting a paper application or applying over the Internet at www.compass.state.pa.us.
